In 2017, the first Crunchyroll Anime Awards was held to celebrate the anime of 2016, and we had great anime debuting that year, such as ERASED, Mob Psycho 100, My Hero Academia, and Re:Zero, all of which continue to be successful to this day.

The big winner of Anime of the Year and several other categories at that event was Yuri on Ice, which also took home awards for best opening, ending, best couple, emotional scene, best boy, and animation.

At that ceremony, Re:Zero only won the best girl category with Rem, while My Hero Academia won the “hero of the year” award with Deku. After the success of Yuri on Ice, a movie called Yuri!!! on Ice: Ice Adolescence was announced in April 2017. However, after several years, MAPPA canceled the project.

After the announcement in 2017 of the film’s production, it was reported in September 2019 that the release was being postponed. Although initially planned for 2019, the reason for the delay was to substantially increase the content.

In 2020, a new update revealed that the film was still in production but they had not reached the stage where they could announce the release date.

Now, in April 2024, the film has finally been canceled, leaving fans of the original anime saddened. MAPPA did not explain exactly why the film was canceled, only mentioning “several circumstances”.
