MAPPA Falls Short on Working Conditions, According to Animators

The issue of poor working conditions in the anime industry has been lingering for quite some time. It appears that MAPPA Studio is not providing favorable working conditions, at least according to some animators.

Animators have taken to social media to report the subpar working conditions offered by the studio, describing the environment as far from ideal. However, they can’t disclose much due to recent discussions on social media suggesting that the studio has compelled animators to sign a Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA), prohibiting anyone involved in the production from speaking openly about it on social media.

However, even this NDA hasn’t deterred some animators from sharing their opinions on the working conditions of Jujutsu Kaisen 2:

“I have nothing to lose, if you want to take me to court for complaining, go ahead!” said one animator in a now-deleted tweet.

“I won’t compromise my health for a job that doesn’t cover my entire income, let alone any other expenses of my main job, and my overall well-being means more to me than the fear of getting blacklisted.”

Another animator remarked: “The place I am at right now is a basic mess and not very good, so if you want to do your best, don’t get involved. If you want to do things right and be paid properly, this might be a good place for you. Although it’s a mess, it’s also a good place for newcomers to stand out because there are opportunities available, and they are handling standout projects. But if you want your work to be respected, it’s better not to get involved.”

Yet another animator stated: “The current situation is really terrible… I wish the schedules were more manageable for the staff.”

Although some haven’t explicitly mentioned MAPPA, this is the conclusion that many have drawn from various tweets and conversations. In a Reddit post, comments on the matter have exceeded 700.

It’s worth noting that, in addition to Jujutsu Kaisen 2, MAPPA recently released the film Alice to Therese no Maboroshi Koujou in September, with the conclusion of Shingeki no Kyojin on the horizon, and the premiere of Bucchigiri?! scheduled for January.

One of their recent anime, Jigokuraku, had animation quality slightly below their usual standards.
