MyAnimeList Sold to AI Company Gaudiy
MyAnimeList, one of the largest anime and manga database platforms, has been sold by Media Do Holdings to Gaudiy, a company specializing in Web3 and artificial intelligence. The announcement was made on March 26, 2024.
MyAnimeList Sold to AI Company Gaudiy
Founded in 2018, Gaudiy is known for utilizing blockchain and generative AI to create “fan nations” — online spaces where people can interact and connect. The company operates the Gaudiy Fanlink platform, focused on blockchain and NFTs, with major partners such as Sony Music Group, Bandai Namco, Sanrio, Aniplex, and Shueisha.
The acquisition of MyAnimeList is a strategic move to expand Gaudiy’s presence in the entertainment sector, leveraging technology to enhance fan engagement within the otaku community.
The Journey of MyAnimeList
Created in 2005, MyAnimeList quickly became one of the primary database tools for anime and manga fans. The platform has changed ownership several times: DeNA purchased the site in 2015 before selling it to Media Do Holdings in 2019.
Over the years, MyAnimeList has established several key partnerships, including:
- 2018: Digital manga stores in partnership with Viz Media and Kodansha Comics.
- 2019: Streaming integration partnership with HIDIVE.
- 2021: ¥311 million investment from companies like Kadokawa Corporation and DMM.com LLC.
- 2024: Launch of the MANGA MIRAI service in the U.S., in collaboration with Media Do, NTT Docomo, and Akatsuki Group.
Fans Are Not Happy!
Gaudiy’s acquisition of MyAnimeList suggests possible Web3 and AI integrations, which could introduce NFTs and other new features—a prospect that has already sparked backlash among fans.
Many users have voiced concerns, with some stating they plan to migrate to Anilist, MyAnimeList’s main rival. The biggest fear is Gaudiy’s use of AI, which remains a controversial topic among anime and manga enthusiasts. In the end, only time will tell what the future holds for MAL.
