Trigger Says Fanservice is Necessary in Anime
Much is said about fanservice and its necessity, which even created the meme of ‘unnecessary fanservice’ in the community, and lo and behold, the owners of Studio Trigger came forward and stated that fanservice is necessary for anime.
The website Febri spoke with Kazuki Nakashima, who works as a writer at Trigger studio, and director Hiroyuki Imaishi. During the interview, Nakashima jokingly said that a scene where someone spies on another taking a bath would be prohibited today if there isn’t a good reason, such as a character’s life being at risk. He talked about his view on fanservice.
Studio Trigger is famous for producing some of the anime with a lot of ecchi scenes like Kill la Kill, Panty and Stocking, and Darling in the Franxx.
Trigger Says Fanservice is Necessary in Anime
We are doing a commercial job, so we want the audience to see it. I don’t mind if they say, ‘I don’t get it,’ but I don’t want them to feel unnecessarily uncomfortable. On the other hand, if we make the work completely sterile, people’s immunity will weaken, and everyone will die. Therefore, there is a way of thinking that we should dare to take on the stigma and convey harmful things to the public.’
Laughing, they continued to talk about fanservice: ‘We do it with the high aspiration that ‘this is necessary for the immunity of human beings.’ We’ll never be appreciated for it, but we’re willing to go out in disgrace for the sake of humanity. There is a way to do it with that kind of feeling (laughs).’ Imaishi added, ‘Be that as it may, I don’t want to perish if I can help it.’
This was reported by the CBR website in an article published yesterday based on the interview from the Febri site, for those who read the original interview, however, they say they perceive that both Nakashima and Imaishi were speaking more in a joking tone than being necessarily serious.
