The iconic Slam Dunk spot in Kamakura, Japan, is facing a serious issue caused by overtourism. After the closure of the nearest public restrooms, locals have reported increasing cases of tourists relieving themselves in public, creating both a nuisance and a public health concern.

The railway crossing near Kamakura Kōkōmae Station became internationally famous after appearing in the anime Slam Dunk and surged in popularity again following the success of The First Slam Dunk movie in 2022, which broke box office records across Asia. Since then, the crossing has turned into a “pilgrimage site” for anime fans worldwide.

However, the station is small and lacks infrastructure to handle large crowds. With the closure of the restrooms due to misuse and frequent blockages, some tourists began using nearby areas inappropriately, leading to complaints from residents.

Local Residents and Hospital Affected

A nearby hospital, which occasionally allowed tourists to use its restrooms, also restricted access after repeated incidents of poor behavior. As a result, staff reported finding feces in multiple spots on the premises, considering it a clear public health hazard.

City officials have already inspected the site and are reportedly discussing countermeasures. In the meantime, residents are urging for immediate action to stop the inappropriate behavior and preserve the reputation of the famous Slam Dunk spot in Kamakura.
