Rogers Mascot Faces Backlash from Women Online
In Japan, there is a supermarket chain called Rogers, and recently it has become the target of a campaign aiming to cancel its mascot.
A tweet on the world’s most sensible social network, posted by a woman, went viral after she called the mascot “disgusting” and said she hoped Rogers would cancel her.
Rogers Mascot Faces Backlash from Women Online
The post, which has already surpassed 35 million views, reads: “Honestly, the fact that this is the official mascot of a supermarket is disgusting. I want it canceled because of the negative reactions.”
As you may have noticed, the Rogers mascot wears tight clothing, has large breasts and noticeable curves, as shown in the illustrations below:
Among the supporters of the backlash was someone who made the outrageous claim that displaying an anime girl with large breasts near food could violate “food safety standards.” Here are more reactions:
“This is tough for a supermarket. This type of artwork doesn’t go well with food. And if management agrees with this, you wonder what kind of standards they have for handling food.”
“Honestly, I kind of like the character design… but I’d prefer it not be used in a supermarket.”
“Ugh… does this really appeal to everyone? Her face is worse than her chest. Is the store owner just projecting his fetish here?”
“The artist probably combined all the traits he likes in women and clearly loves the character, but it just looks like erotic graffiti you’d find in a bathroom. This supermarket doesn’t understand the difference between design and art. If it’s for personal satisfaction, they can draw their favorite girls however they want, but they shouldn’t impose their personal tastes in public, where children and the elderly can see it.”
Support for Rogers Emerges Online
Despite the backlash, many people came to Rogers’ defense. Let’s look at some supportive comments:
“There are only 18 Rogers stores left, so if you hate the character so much, just don’t go there. Shop somewhere else.”
“As a customer who occasionally shops at Rogers, I agree that the nurse outfit isn’t ideal for a supermarket and is a bit distasteful. But it’s really not that serious, so I just ignore it. Most shoppers are too busy to care about the drawings anyway.”
“The aggressiveness of some women is truly disgusting. They judge based only on their own feelings, don’t take any real action, and instead try to provoke others into attacking. If you don’t like the store, just stop going. End of story.”
“It’s not something that men or women stare at so intensely. Everyone has the right to like or dislike something, but saying things like ‘burn it’ or ‘make it disappear’ — that’s just irresponsible and harmful.”
“Honestly, I kind of like the character design.”
“Frankly, I think the number of people who come to Rogers and complain about the character is extremely small. Most people don’t care. It’s a discount supermarket, so people go in, shop, and leave. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with them creating their own mascot and using it in their own company. Let’s just accept it as part of their brand.”
“People are making a huge fuss, but this character was registered in 2016. Apparently, it started in just one store but expanded to all stores because it was well-received. And seriously — calling this erotic? Grow up. Do you get turned on every time you see a busty woman walking down the street?”
We’ll see how far this controversy goes.
