Is the Mahou Shoujo anime genre dying?? A sub-genre of manga and anime where usually a girl has magical powers to fight evil. We have good examples of Mahou Shoujo works like Sailor Moon and Sakura Cardcaptor.
These magical girls end up getting their powers through some enchanted object like a pendant, a wand or a lasso, transforming these girls into formidable magical heroines.
An anime that explores the sub-genre of Mahou Shoujo a lot is the Puella Magi Madoka Magica anime where we can have a deeper view and see that each character can use their magical powers in the way they want.
Mahou Shoujo tends to be very positive and cheerful. Usually the characters fight for love, peace, hope and beauty, and never for negative things like revenge. Over time, the heroines learn the values of friendship and cooperation.
Is the Mahou Shoujo anime genre dying?
However, some fans fear that Mahou Shoujo is dying, is that so? This led to a series of comments online:
”Well, Neon Genesis Evangelion also built something for the mecha, but in the end it was shut down as soon as it appeared”
”I think Mahou Shoujo Tokushusen Asuka was still relevant in the last decade”
”Well, I think it has to do with the fact that they no longer know where to direct the genre, whether for children or for adults”
”Mahou Shoujo Site was also good, but I don’t think it got the expected reception as they never announced a sequel”
”I think the problem is that Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica was too good. It’s not that the genre is being forgotten, it’s that no new series has managed to compete with it. Even the new Madoka sequels couldn’t do it”
”Well, now everything looks like a Madoka Magica imitation”
”First of all, the magical girl genre has never been very popular on its own. Today it is used as a comic resource in other works”
”Well, we can’t say that the magical girls would be popular in the beginning either”
”When you do something really good, everything after that will be labeled a bad copy”
”At the time, I guess I was having fun watching the new magical girl franchises, but none of them got a second season!”
”I don’t know, I think the only way to revive the magical girl genre is to mix it with other more popular genres. Maybe make the girls from The Idolmaster transform”
”Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica didn’t revive the genre, it just gave it the send-off it deserved”
”Well, what happens is that if you do a normal magical girl story, you’ll be compared to Sailor Moon or Sakura Cardcaptor, and if you do a dark magical girl story, you’ll be compared to Madoka Magica. There is practically nothing else to do with this genre”
It’s really complicated. What will be the future of Mahou Shoujo? Well, only time will tell.
