Daisaku Chiba aspired to become a mangaka, and as you can see from the illustration below, he had a beautiful art style and could have pursued a career in this field effortlessly.

Around 7:40 p.m. on January 15, 2007, Daisaku Chiba bid farewell to some classmates and rode his bicycle towards a friend’s house he was planning to visit.

As he pedaled towards his friend’s place in a rural area of the city, he encountered another cyclist, and that’s when the story took a dark turn.

According to a witness, they saw Daisaku with another man, and this man was furious, so furious that the witness said his face was red and he had his arms open in an intimidating manner towards Daisaku, who was looking down.

Another witness described the man’s behavior as bizarre, moving in an unusual way while shouting cursed words at Daisaku, calling him “Idiot, Idiot” as seen in this police recreation:

A Japanese TV station recreated this scene at the actual location of the incident, check the video below:

Without any warning, the man pulled out a small knife and started stabbing Daisaku. The two engaged in a struggle and fell into a field next to the sidewalk. Despite fighting bravely to protect himself, Daisaku was stabbed multiple times.

Shortly after, another witness on a bicycle appeared. Upon arriving, they saw Daisaku lying on his back on the ground, and the assailant was sitting on the sidewalk. Initially, this witness left the scene in fear but returned shortly after.

When they came back, they witnessed a different scene: Daisaku was sitting on the sidewalk, and the criminal was no longer there. This witness then approached Daisaku, who said, “I was stabbed by a man I don’t know, please call an ambulance.”

The medics arrived and began the rescue. Using his last strength, Daisaku told the medical team:

“I don’t know the criminal. He started yelling at me out of nowhere. He forced me down into the field, and I climbed back up the street, trying to call an ambulance. The man was a little older than me.”

Daisaku Chiba was rescued, but sadly, he didn’t survive, passing away at the age of 20, leaving his mother behind.

The Beginning of the Investigation

From there, the police initiated their investigation to find the criminal, but it proved to be complicated. Initially, it was believed that the man might have a chronically bad temper and could quickly resort to physical violence.

The police theorized that the man became irritated because he had to stop his bicycle due to Daisaku being in front of him or because he had to slow down.

After interviewing witnesses, the police came up with these sketches (only depicting the face; the body sketch was made by Daisaku’s friends). The man was estimated to be around 20 to 30 years old, 1.70 to 1.80 meters tall, and wearing black clothing.

Two physical pieces of evidence stood out in this case. The first was the killer’s shoes, identified by footprints left in the mud at the field where Daisaku was stabbed. Thanks to the footprints, they were able to precisely identify the type of shoes the criminal wore:

Additionally, the man’s bicycle was described as a distinctive dark-colored “mother’s bicycle.” These bicycles have a space behind the seat for a child to ride and another space in front for placing bags.

This provided another clue to the police, suggesting that the criminal was a local resident since these bicycles are not suitable for long-distance travel. The police’s theory was that the criminal was heading back home from work.

The police do not believe that robbery was the motive for the crime, as none of Daisaku’s belongings were stolen. Furthermore, the area has houses facing the street, and many cars pass by, leading the police to believe that Daisaku was merely in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Unfortunately, that’s all there is about the case; the criminal was never identified.

The Manga

As the case remained unsolved, rumors began to circulate. One of them was that the criminal suffered from some mental problem, and some people believed this due to the man’s strange behavior. Additionally, the region has hospitals of that kind, so it’s hard to avoid such rumors.

Daisaku lived with his mother, who tirelessly worked on her son’s case, distributing flyers to see if anyone had any tips about the criminal.

Friends and professors of Daisaku at the manga university created a manga that depicts the events of the crime, from Daisaku saying goodbye to his friends to the crime and its aftermath.

The manga shows the kind of person Daisaku was, his dreams, but also serves to try to find some clues about the criminal. You can see the manga here. On the last page of the manga, it’s written:

“The criminal is probably hiding among you. You are the only one who can find him.”
