It's Not Jesus in the Famous Moshi Moshi Meme

Have you ever seen a meme featuring a long-haired, bearded guy on the phone with the big words “MOSHI MOSHI, JESUS DESU”? Probably yes, and if that was indeed your answer, let me tell you, that’s not Jesus.

It’s Not Jesus in the Famous Moshi Moshi Meme

It all started when the user below saw a product with a shirt featuring the famous meme and commented on the character on the cover, and then some people began to point out that, in reality, it’s NOT Jesus represented there.

It's Not Jesus in the Famous Moshi Moshi Meme

I understand whoever made the meme; maybe they just came across the image without any context and thought it was Jesus (speaking on the phone? Must have found anime strange and moved on). After all, he has long hair, a big beard, and a serene face.

However, the truth is that this person is not Jesus but rather the leader of a very dangerous cult that was involved in one of the biggest crimes in Japan’s history.

The True Identity behind the Moshi Moshi Jesus Desu Meme

The character in the meme is named Shoko Asahara, and he is the anime version of the founder of Aum Shinrikyou, Shoko Asahara, a religious cult responsible for a terrorist attack that occurred on March 20, 1995, in Tokyo.

In summary, on that morning, members of the Aum Shinrikyo cult spread sarin gas, a highly toxic nerve agent, in various Tokyo subway lines. Sarin is a deadly chemical nerve agent that causes paralysis and respiratory problems in its victims.

As a result of the attacks, 13 people were killed, and about 6,000 people were injured, many of whom suffered long-term health consequences. The attack caused widespread panic in the city and drew international attention.

So where does this scene come from? From an anime made by the cult, released before the attack, to attract anime and manga fans to join them:

So, while the meme may be funny, it’s not Jesus in there; it’s the leader of a dangerous cult responsible for the death of people and the suffering of many others.
