Author has Manga Cancelled at the Last Minute and by an "Explicit" Magazine

Author has Manga Cancelled at the Last Minute and by an “Explicit” Magazine! Manga artist Unagiya Sanshiro announced on his profile that his manga ended up being cancelled after spending the last 2 years working on its creation.

Unagiya Sanshiro’s new manga was planned to be published in Weekly Young Magazine, a Kodansha magazine targeted at adult men.

The magazine is known for its unrestricted content among Japanese publications; for instance, Prison School manga was published in it.

However, in a statement, Unagiya Sanshiro mentioned that at the moment he received the news of the cancellation, the structure of his manga was already set, with 5 chapters completed and a story planned for 60 chapters.

The editorial department had already given the green light for the announcement of the manga’s publication, but in the final moments, they discovered content they deemed “problematic” and decided to cancel everything.

The author acknowledges that the manga had content that could bring risks right from the beginning. However, the manga had been checked by editors of the magazine, who had given their approval and found no issues with the story.

Another Unagiya Sanshiro manga

Unagiya Sanshiro expressed feeling an “almost unbearable frustration” for having 3 years of effort invested in this story reduced to nothing in just a few days. On a positive note, the author says he feels happy that he had his story approved to be featured in Young Magazine and will take this motivation for his future works.

“I wonder what kind of content Young Magazine rejected since they have published manga like Tawawa on Monday, Satanophany, My Home Hero, and even Parallel Paradise.”

The response from Japanese readers was one of anger, questioning why the publisher decided to do this at the last moment, while others were very curious to know what the manga was about to be cancelled before its publication.

Young Magazine has a reputation for being “unbalanced,” so it was very strange for the manga to be completely cancelled instead of undergoing revisions or something similar.

“It’s hard to say anything without knowing the details, but I wonder if a lawyer who halts a play when it is already written to such an extent can properly assess the risks…”

Many consider that the method and timing of the series’ cancellation were unprofessional and unjust to the author, but without knowing further details about the story, it’s difficult to judge whether the cancellation was correct or not.
