Gojo vs Sukuna: Gege Reveals the Reason Behind Gojo’s Defeat
Since its debut in 2018, Jujutsu Kaisen has become one of Shonen Jump’s biggest hits. One of the series’ highlights was the clash between Gojo and Sukuna — without a doubt, one of the most talked-about moments — along with its ending, which many fans still refuse to accept. Now, author Gege Akutami has finally explained the real reason behind Gojo’s defeat in that battle.
Gojo vs Sukuna: Gege Reveals the Reason Behind Gojo’s Defeat
During a live event on April 18, 2025, Gege Akutami answered questions regarding the battle between the two most powerful sorcerers in the Jujutsu Kaisen universe. The fight, which dominated social media week after week, reached its peak between chapters 235 and 236. While Gojo seemed to have the upper hand in chapter 235, the next chapter shocked everyone by showing his brutal defeat.
According to Akutami, after defeating Mahoraga, Gojo became overly confident, believing that Sukuna would no longer be able to bypass his “Infinity” technique. This overconfidence caused Gojo to lower his guard, allowing Sukuna to unleash the forbidden technique “World Cutting Slash,” developed thanks to Mahoraga’s adaptation. Even without one of his hands, Sukuna made a binding vow to instantly launch the fatal attack.
Akutami explained: “The usual Gojo would have noticed something was wrong and would have avoided the fatal blow. But after defeating Mahoraga, he believed he was safe.”
This reckless attitude from Gojo mirrors other moments where his arrogance led to his downfall, such as in his fights against Toji and Kenjaku. However, many fans criticized this decision, arguing that in the battle against Sukuna, there wasn’t enough narrative buildup to justify Gojo’s loss of concentration.
Comparatively, other characters have also fallen victim to overconfidence. Sukuna, Kenjaku, and other powerful sorcerers have also let their guard down at critical moments, proving that even the strongest are vulnerable.
Furthermore, Akutami had already hinted that Gojo would not survive until the end of the story. In previous interviews, the mangaka stated that among the four main characters (Yuji, Megumi, Nobara, and Gojo), only one would survive. Therefore, Gojo’s death was almost inevitable for the conclusion of the plot.
The question that remains among fans is: who is truly the strongest, Sukuna or Gojo? Many believe that without the intervention of the “World Cutting Slash,” Gojo could have won. Others argue that Sukuna, with his cunning and mastery of binding vows, was always one step ahead.
In the end, whatever Gege decides, that’s what happens.
