Mahou Shoujo ni Akogarete Outsells Solo Leveling in Blu-ray Sales
Current Blu-ray and DVD sales in the anime industry matter little compared to the revenue generated from licensing and streaming. This shift explains the sudden return of certain animes like Kimi ni Todoke. However, comparing sales figures can still be interesting, as demonstrated by the recent contrast between Mahou Shoujo ni Akogarete and Solo Leveling.
Mahou Shoujo ni Akogarete Outsells Solo Leveling in Blu-ray Sales
Mahou Shoujo ni Akogarete faced criticism on social media for being an “anime for weirdos and perverts” due to its plot involving a girl who promotes masochism among magical girls. In contrast, Solo Leveling was the hype of the season, garnering numerous comments, views, and attention from reaction channels. However, when the Blu-rays were released, it became clear where fans chose to spend their money.
The third volume of Mahou Shoujo ni Akogarete’s Blu-ray sold exactly 9,675 copies in its first week of release. For comparison, the third DVD volume of Solo Leveling sold only 91 copies! Note that Solo Leveling sold 91 DVDs; the Blu-ray sales were too low to appear on the ranking.
Additionally, besides the 9,000 copies, the special edition of the first Blu-ray volume, which comes with a figure, sold another 1,620 copies. The first volume had sold 6,616 copies in its first week.
Let’s take a look at how other animes performed:
- Classroom of the Elite 3 Vol 1: 1,024 copies
- Mashle 2 Vol 3: 333 copies
- Dungeon Meshi Vol 2: 2,725 copies
- Boku no Kokoro no Yabai Yatsu 2 Vol 6: 3,002 copies
- Kimi no Koto ga Daidaidaidaidaisuki na 100-nin no Kanojo Vol 3: 591 copies
Overall, sales aren’t great, but disc sales are no longer a key factor in deciding sequels. It’s still interesting to see where fans are willing to spend their money.
Let’s see how people reacted:
“After all the hype for Solo Leveling, the BD sales are very poor.”
“Solo Leveling was never intended for the Japanese market. That’s why it also has a Korean dub, which is rare or never for an anime to have another dub besides English. Its BD volume also lacks bonuses compared to other animes. The producer never expected it to hit first.” (The comment above is just speculation; it doesn’t make sense to release a series in a country if there’s no expectation.)
“The fanbase that enjoys Solo Leveling doesn’t like otaku culture in general and doesn’t participate in buying Blu-rays. Looking at its performance on streaming services will give you a better idea of its overall popularity.”
“Dungeon Meshi sold very well despite having a higher price, great victory.”
“No surprise.”
“It will never cease to be hilarious how this series is being monitored specifically for DVD sales.”
“If you want us to buy physical media, give us the perverted stuff… FACT!”
“I hope Mahoako’s success leads to a new wave of more daring adaptations again. Completely shameless series are what people have always loved about anime.”
