User Gets Banned from Manga App for Taking Screenshots

Launched in 2018, Shueisha’s YanJan is an application where you can legally read manga. Recently, a platform user was banned because it seems that taking screenshots is prohibited, implying that the user is illegally distributing Shueisha’s products

The user took to Twitter to share their situation with the app:

“While I was reading 100 Girlfriends on YanJan, my smartphone started vibrating. I took a screenshot of the screen (from a message) saying that my account was suspended, which left me annoyed.”

The message reads: “We have suspended the use of this service because we have confirmed that it has been used fraudulently and violated our terms of service.” “This app prohibits screenshots, video recording, and screen mirroring during the viewing of works.”

The user whose account was banned was asked to contact Shueisha’s YanJan to try to resolve the situation:

“We detected that you took screenshots on the manga viewer more than a certain number of times on your account, so we took measures to suspend your use of the service.”

And indeed, it is in the app’s terms of service; taking screenshots is prohibited:

“When using this service, the user shall not engage in or may engage in any of the following acts.

If any of these acts are confirmed, the Company may take appropriate measures at its discretion, such as suspending the use of part or all of the service or deleting the account without prior notice to the user.

(1) Reproduction (including screenshots and video recording), distribution, public transmission, modification, licensing for third-party use, and other purposes not for the user’s personal use of this product.”

Screenshots may seem harmless, but for things like manga, a series of screenshots can amount to a perfect copy of an entire publication that can be easily shared.
