Touka Gettan: An Anime Broadcast in Reverse Order
In 2007, the anime adaptation of Touka Gettan, based on a visual novel released that same year, premiered on Japanese television. Unlike what viewers are used to, this broadcast was both peculiar and confusing.
Why? Because the episodes were not aired in chronological order. Instead, the series’ final episode was the first to air, surprising fans with this unusual approach.
Touka Gettan: An Anime Broadcast in Reverse Order
When Touka Gettan aired on April 2, 2007, the first episode shown was, in fact, the series finale. The anime was broadcast in reverse, starting with the end and slowly moving towards the true first episode, which was aired last. If you want to watch the series in its chronological order, here’s the sequence: Episode 26 > Episodes 24 to 2 > Episode 25 > Episode 1.
Touka Gettan’s director, Yamaguchi Yuuji, was so confident in this creative decision that he believed other animes would follow suit. However, the result left many viewers confused by the episode order.
In addition to this, Yamaguchi implemented another unique idea: he asked voice actresses Shimizu Ai, Noto Mamiko, and Yamamoto Maria to write the scripts for some episodes. To the director, this would give the character dialogues a sense of “authenticity.” However, this unconventional approach also divided opinions.
