But what is Serial Experiments Lain? It is a game based on the anime series of the same name. It was released exclusively in Japan in 1998 for PlayStation by Pioneer LDC.
The game features unique gameplay and is described as a “network simulator,” placing the player in the role of a therapist exploring the mental state of the protagonist Iwakura Lain, unlocking various pieces of textual, visual, and aural media.
Due to its complex system, the game was not a commercial success. However, its rarity, combined with the anime’s status as a cult classic, has made it a highly valuable collector’s item over the years.
A video game retailer known as “Beep Shop” revealed on Twitter that they own a sealed copy of Serial Experiments Lain.
“We purchased Serial Experiments Lain, a top-tier software for PlayStation, and it has not been opened yet! This could start a war…!”
