Otakus Don’t Understand Salad Bowl of Eccentrics and Author responds
Are you perhaps watching the anime Salad Bowl of Eccentrics? It’s currently airing this spring 2024 season. Not watching? Well, it’s truly one of those anime that’s flying under many people’s radars.
Here’s the synopsis: Sousuke Kaburaya, a impoverished detective, meets Sara, a princess from another world with magical powers. They begin living together, and Sara quickly adjusts her life to modern-day Japan.
As you can tell from the synopsis, we have a princess with magical powers from another world living with a detective… but did you know that some people are not quite understanding the story?
Otakus Don’t Understand Salad Bowl of Eccentrics and Author responds
On April 26, the original light novel author, Hirasaka Yomi, took to her Twitter to talk about people’s comments claiming they don’t understand the series:
She posted:
“Frequently I see comments about Salad Bowl of Eccentrics saying: ‘I don’t understand what this story is trying to do,’ but, on the contrary, sometimes I would like to ask: ‘What are you living for?’ This is a story for those who cannot immediately answer that question. If you can answer immediately, then stay as you are, within the limits of not causing problems to others.”
Hirasaka Yomi is a “controversial” author in the otaku community; she also wrote the light novels for “Haganai” and “Imouto Sae Ireba Ii” and has caused a stir a few times before.
So, from her comment, it seems that there isn’t much of an objective in the story of Salad Bowl of Eccentrics; it’s practically a “go with the flow” kind of tale. Let’s see how people reacted to her comment:
“Cool, that doesn’t answer anything.”
“I like the anime, but this attitude from her disappointed me; you can see she hasn’t had personal growth since the last criticisms years ago.”
“This author always gets upset with criticisms made to her.”
“The animation gets worse with each episode; it’s the first time I drop an anime because of animation quality.”
“Her recent works are narrative disasters; nothing makes sense.”
“An answer as incomprehensible as the story she wrote.”
“Such an uninformative response doesn’t change the fans’ opinions.”
“Her previous light novels were good, but this one I just can’t understand.”
