New Jump Manga Drama Queen Causes Drama Online
A new manga has started publication in Jump, its name is Drama Queen, and it is authored by Kuraku Ichikawa. With just one chapter, Western otakus are already engaged in a virtual war for considering that Drama Queen presents racist content.
The story of the Drama Queen manga is about aliens. A meteor is heading toward Earth, and aliens end up protecting humanity. As gratitude, the aliens begin to live on our planet, sharing their technologies with us.
However, this causes some problems that the authorities seem not to care about. The alien population surpasses the mark of 18 million inhabitants in Japan alone, and they have privileges that humans do not.
For example, aliens have advantages in renting apartments, do not have to pay for parking their cars, receive more prominence in sports, and many aliens do not even bother to learn the local language, living on Earth without speaking a word of Japanese.
This irritates our protagonists Nomamoto and Kitami. They hate aliens and wish they would all die. They raise the question of whether a meteor was really coming to Earth or if this is part of the aliens’ plan to colonize Earth in a “friendly” way.
After sharing their hatred for the aliens, Kitami ends up killing one, and Nomamoto suggests they cook the alien, eating it soon after. Thus begins the story of two people who hate aliens and will kill and devour them one by one to live a dignified life.
I read the first chapter, and it gave me a Chainsaw Man vibe, you know? I can’t explain it well, but it reminds me of Chainsaw. Anyway, let’s get to the controversy.
New Jump Manga Drama Queen Causes Drama Online
Drama Queen sparked controversy on social media because many people saw the manga as a metaphor by the author for something that has been happening in several countries.
Many noticed similarities in the plot of Drama Queen with recent world events, where many countries (mainly in Europe) have been accepting mass immigration, causing various conflicts and problems.
Someone commented: “Aliens immigrate en masse to Japan and start replacing the population. They are generally rude and violent, do not care to learn the local language, and the police ignore their crimes because of their race. The protagonist teams up with another racist to kill and eat the aliens. What a based manga.”
Shall we look at some comments made about the first chapter?
“A manga about anti-immigration? Great, based Japan.”
“I can’t blame the Japanese for writing this.”
“Comments saying this is more anti-colonial than anti-immigration. I’d like that to be true, but: 1. Japan, famously never colonized; 2. The weird jab at ‘partner’ versus ‘boyfriend’; 3. Themes of a media narrative and ‘canceling’; 4. Themes of ‘freeloaders’ versus ‘hard workers.’ The signs aren’t good…”
“This manga is disturbing in a very bad way. In a world where there is hate against foreign people and refugees, all the allegories that the protagonists use towards the aliens sound very relatable to the dynamics of our own world. Not good at all.”
“In this manga, aliens lie about saving the Earth to be let in, come in droves diminishing the Japanese population, attack natives, are exempt from laws, don’t learn Japanese, or integrate into the culture. Why does this sound so similar to what happens in Europe? An extremely based manga.”
“What clueless comments lol. Ridiculous generation; everything has to be labeled as prejudice. Don’t like it, don’t read it! So far, it’s very good.”
“Not sure why people think that the highly advanced race of aliens that came to Earth and are using the native people’s resources are the oppressed ones.”
“It’s literally just a manga about killing and eating aliens. If they were introduced as evil beings, y’all wouldn’t bat an eye, but since they’re portrayed as more humanoid, y’all want to assume it’s all a fictional portrayal of racism. Get a life; it definitely isn’t that deep…”
“Ah yes, I love fascist propaganda in media and people defending it in the comments.”
“Uh, there are some mildly uncomfortable undertones to the plot. I really hope that the author is aware of that.”
“Now this kind of dark shonen is what I’ve been waiting for. You guys are such drama queens for interpreting it and comparing it to real-life situations.”
“A few months ago, half of the comments here were constantly saying that a country needed to be destroyed under every chapter, and now you cry because aliens are being called bad?”
“There is a difference between foreigners and apartheid from a group that thinks itself superior to you and is comfortable with casually punching you in the face with no remorse.”
“Long ago, this nation was known as the land of the samurai. The dream-filled Edo skies, upon which the samurai once gazed, are now filled with the ships of the Amanto, beings that suddenly invaded and rose to power. And now these arrogant aliens walk the streets of the city.”
“This is the anti-settler colony manga, not anti-immigration. The aliens are clearly in power and have hijacked all bureaucracy. Also, the main characters are definitely sociopaths, lol.”
“How’s this allowed in Jump?”
“This manga can be handled very poorly. I hope it isn’t, but still.”
“This might just be an anti-colonial manga.”
“The most annoying people you know are going to call this the manga of the year.”
“Is this manga just a disguised way to say ‘I hate strangers and want to eat them’? A really strange vibe for the first chapter.”
“People talking about racism when the aliens literally invaded the country, look down on the natives, and get away with crimes. In what world do victims of racism get those benefits? Aliens aren’t victims here. They’re colonizers.”
“The protagonist is part of an oppressed minority group, and she’s committing ‘hate crimes,’ XD.”
“Interesting. Hope it can stay afloat long enough to develop more intrigue. I like it. Like, racism and xenophobia are just so traumatizing that we can’t even write stories about it anymore? Life is life; bad things happen, people make fictional stories about it. If you can’t handle it, then move on.”
“This premise sure can be interpreted in a very bad way, but I really want to see where this goes. Maybe we are just too used to seeing attacks on others everywhere, and the author just wanted to make a manga about gaslighting aliens.”
“Weird, and not in a good way.”
