We’ll Never Get Another Anime Like Yosuga no Sora

Developed by Sphere, the visual novel Yosuga no Sora was released for PC in 2008. Just two years later, in 2010, its anime adaptation premiered, and even 14 years after its original broadcast, fans still fondly remember Yosuga no Sora.

The anime was bold in its adaptation and innovative in its format. Since it’s based on a visual novel, the game features multiple routes for different girls. The Yosuga no Sora anime decided to adapt all of these routes, dedicating parts of its episodes to each heroine.

And as if that wasn’t enough, it even included the steamy scenes—yes, including the infamous moments between the siblings, which to this day are still widely used as memes.

A tweet went viral among fans. Posted on April 20, user Chise shared a scene where Sora remembers being kissed by her brother when they were kids, with the caption: “Still thinking about this.”

The tweet reached over 2 million views, and it made its way to Japanese social media, where people commented:

  • An incest anime like this definitely couldn’t be made today.

  • If you’re not averse to erotic content, you should watch it at least once.

  • Yosuga no Sora is actually kind of wholesome.

  • The direction and production of this anime were really beautiful.

  • That revolving chair scene was good, huh?

  • I feel like watching it again.

  • I wish they’d make more anime like this.

  • Of course it sparks divided opinions.

  • The incest aspect is hard to accept, but I liked the story.

  • It’s funny how they made a North American version of Yosuga no Sora, lol.

  • Yosuga no Sora will always be remembered.

  • There might be more erotic anime than Yosuga, but one that portrays love in such a crazy way is rare.

  • The real issue was that they were blood-related siblings. I liked the older woman with glasses who took the protagonist’s virginity.

  • I remember something happening at the front door of the house.

  • It’s kind of silly to criticize something based on an eroge (adult game).

  • Why was that sister so complicated?

  • Sexy and cute, she’s adorable. That loli Sora reminds me of someone from Hololive, but I can’t recall who.

  • I only masturbated to this anime once. Just once.

  • It was just an 18+ anime being aired like it was for the general public. There’s no reason to praise it.
    — I was mad because, since it was aired as a general anime, it didn’t even have erotic content. They should’ve just released it as 18+.

  • I also remember they ran away abroad.

  • If it had been a galge (romance game), sure, but adapting an eroge for TV is complicated… It was probably just for marketing.

  • For me, the most shocking anime aired as general content was Elfen Lied.

  • Anyway, because of censorship, few people actually watched the aired version.

  • Guys who say this is a good show are like… (judging silence).

  • School Days with Makoto was absurd, but funny.

  • I’m still waiting for Ishuzoku Reviewers season 2.

  • Wasn’t Seikon no Qwaser kind of heavy too?

  • In the end, incest is just another taboo.
    — It’s a way of expressing a love so strong it crosses boundaries.

  • I discovered Momoclo through this anime.

  • I wish Kyochuu Rettou had been made with this same level of quality.

  • Because of new technology, old content has completely lost its appeal.

Some time ago, I came across another thread where Japanese fans said that Yosuga no Sora, despite not being a “full R18” anime, had better-animated steamy scenes than current R18 anime, and that it would be hard to surpass.

Yosuga no Sora truly is one of those anime that will stay in people’s minds forever for the boldness it showed. And despite the title of this article, who knows—maybe Deregula will one day deliver something on the same level?
