Mangaka Seo Kouji keeps surprising fans with Truck-kun
Warning: This post contains spoilers for Fuuka: The manga Fuuka, created by Seo Kouji, became known for an unexpected twist that occurs in volume 4. The story follows Yuu Haruna, a young man who meets Fuuka, the story’s heroine, with whom he forms a band. But, to the shock of fans, Fuuka tragically dies when she is hit by a truck, leaving a lasting impact on the plot.
Interestingly, the anime adaptation of Fuuka, particularly in episode 10, takes a different path. Instead of following Fuuka’s tragic fate, the anime’s production team decided to change her outcome, allowing her to survive. About this adaptation, Seo Kouji stated:
“The feeling that I myself wanted to see Fūka Akitsuki living is the number one reason. In the original work, Fūka leaves so that Yū goes forward with his band activities and grows. I don’t think that that choice was a mistake at all, but I received thoughts from readers that ‘It’s sad that Fūka dies.’ So, if they were going all out to make the anime, I was vaguely thinking about if there could be a development where Fūka lives. At that time, the anime producer said, “I want to do a story where Fūka Akitsuki lives,” and it was certainly a godsend.”
The Fuuka manga concluded years ago, and Seo Kouji is currently publishing Megami no Cafe Terrace, where he continues to surprise fans with nods to the infamous “Truck-kun” and other suspenseful moments.

In chapter 75 of Megami no Cafe Terrace, Seo Kouji makes a reference to the accident in Fuuka. In one scene, a character drops her ring in the street and, without looking, runs to retrieve it… but avoids the accident just in time, joking afterward that she doesn’t want to live in an “isekai.”
More recently, in chapter 173, Seo went even further by recreating the scene, but this time involving a tank! Fortunately, another character pulls her to safety just in time. With these scenes, the author continues to tease fans by putting beloved characters at risk while crossing the street.
So far, these are the known examples of Seo Kouji’s references to this theme. If you know of similar moments in his other works, share them in the comments!
