Cultists Target Otakus at Anime Events in Japan
Japan is widely known for its safety, low crime rates, delicious food, and scenic cities. However, like every country, it faces some challenges. One persistent issue is the presence of religious cults, which can become a nuisance for both residents and tourists.
Many of these cults focus on financial scams, starting with friendly conversations but quickly turning pushy in their conversion efforts. Among them, Kenshokai is known for being particularly persistent.
Cultists Target Otakus at Love Live and Other Events
Reports of unpleasant encounters with Kenshokai recruiters are common, involving both locals and foreigners. In addition to going door-to-door, these recruiters have begun attending anime events and idol shows to approach fans.
A recent post on Twitter warned Love Live fans about Kenshokai recruiters spotted at the franchise’s shows, advising attendees not to engage with them and to leave immediately if approached. The tweet gained traction after users confirmed that one of the recruiters attended both days of a Liella event.
“If these men approach you, do not engage and walk away immediately. They’ve been spotted at Love Live events, and other members of Kenshokai might appear too.”
The post sparked further reports from fans about Kenshokai members attending various anime and idol events. Besides Love Live, the recruiters were also seen at Uma Musume, Idolmaster, and idol group Nogizaka46 concerts.
In a previous article, we reported on a peculiar case where an otaku almost got recruited into a religious cult due to his love for Pokémon.
