All-Women City Cancelled in Japan
Recently, a crowdfunding campaign was launched in Japan to create a city exclusively inhabited by women, an idea reminiscent of popular manga plots. The campaign sought to raise 500 million yen (approximately 3 million USD), but the project has since been cancelled, and the campaign page is no longer available.
All-Women City Cancelled in Japan: What Happened?
The idea for the all-women city started just this August. The project aimed to revitalize an abandoned village and turn it into a safe haven where only women would be allowed. Additionally, all work, from construction to administration, would be done exclusively by women. However, visiting the campaign site now only leads to an error message, signaling the project’s cancellation.
Those who donated to the city’s construction were refunded, along with the explanation that “due to certain reasons, the all-women city project was cancelled.” Some Japanese women blamed sexism for the project’s failure.
On the other hand, some raised doubts about the feasibility of the project. For instance, one person pointed out that 500 million yen is far too little to build an entire city. There were also suspicions that the project was merely a promotional stunt to draw attention to feminist causes.
