Studio Trigger director talks about the lack of animators in the anime industry
It’s not new that people talk about the mess that is the anime industry in Japan, more specifically the situation of animators with their terrible working conditions.
In a recent interview, Studio Trigger director Kazuya Matsumoto talks about the lack of animators and the changes in the industry after the pandemic.
Studio Trigger director talks about the lack of animators in the anime industry
Matsumoto mentions that the positive changes in workflow in the anime industry brought about by the pandemic are mainly related to the digitalization of things.
This is what happened in many companies, the normalization of online meetings and the increase in written communication compared to verbal/in-person communication also occurred in the anime industry, which contributed to the workloads of the most overworked employees in the industry being reduced.
Another point that Matsumoto mentions as having changed the anime industry a lot is file sharing, which, according to him, has caused a revolution in the workflow.
Matsumoto also expressed concerns about the lack of animation staff, which he had noticed over the past 1 to 2 years. He says: ”You often see people saying online that it is impossible to pay an entertainer and in fact the situation now is that reaching 100 people results in 1 person responding”. This situation puts pressure on production management in terms of recruitment.
Vacancies in the anime industry are generally not posted on typical recruiting and job listing websites and can most often be seen just by searching for information on the studios’ official websites.
Matsumoto mentions that one point that leaves him particularly dissatisfied is the lack of a singular place that collects and provides this information to those looking for work in the sector, according to him, such a place would significantly help in raising awareness.
The instability of the industry is nothing new for anime fans, many end up noticing it with series being postponed due to lack of planning, low quality animation work being delivered and so on.
