No Romance in One Piece! Will Nami end up with None of the Straw Hats?
No Romance in One Piece! According to Eiichiro Oda from 2009, at least, we don’t know if his mind has changed. The topic of whether there will be romance in One Piece has resurfaced because of Sandman.
No Romance in One Piece! Will Nami end up with None of the Straw Hats?
Sandman is a well-known profile on Twitter, where he is always posting things about One Piece and quotes from Eiichiro Oda, the creator of the series.
Today, he released a statement about whether One Piece will have any romance or not. According to Sandman, this statement was made in 2009 (14 years ago), and it says the following:
“I don’t draw romance because One Piece is a manga for boys. Female fans (of One Piece) ask me to draw romance, but if they want to read that, they should read Shoujo manga, and that’s not my job. I don’t care how many women love Luffy, I don’t think it’s good for them to love each other.”
Oda (2009): I don't draw romance because OP is a manga for boys. Female fans ask me to draw romance, but if they want to read it, they should read shoujo manga, and it's not my job. I don't care how many women love Luffy, but I don't think it's good if they love each other.๐

The context of Oda’s response was that in an interview, he was asked the following question: “Is there a rule of never doing something when drawing manga?” and Oda answered, “romance.”
Upon further research, I found a post on Reddit about another response from Oda regarding whether there will be romance in One Piece, published in February 2022.
Someone asked Oda, “Who does Nami like?” to which Oda’s response was:
“Hmm, in a romantic way? I don’t think there will be romance within the group. Nami probably sees all the positive aspects of those guys. Perhaps many female readers ask this kind of question. Boys are not interested in that at all. One Piece is basically a shonen, a manga for boys, so romance is not shown.”
Some otakus were surprised by Oda’s statement, showing moments in the manga where romantic scenes occurred, such as the examples mentioned above.

Despite the examples given, I believe Oda means that there will be no romance among the main characters, the group, but it doesn’t mean it can’t exist outside of it, as it’s not the focus. But anyway, what do you think?
