Pokémon Card Store Robbery in Japan Involved Rival Shop Owner From Same Neighborhood
The Pokémon card store robbery in Japan recently took a strange turn after authorities revealed the identity of the main suspect. While thefts involving rare Pokémon cards have become more common since card prices skyrocketed during the COVID-19 pandemic, this particular case stunned the community—because it involved two rival shops from the same area.
Pokémon Card Store Robbery in Japan Involved Rival Shop Owner From Same Neighborhood
On July 9, Japanese police arrested a 35-year-old man suspected of robbing a trading card store. According to local outlet Sanspo, the suspect allegedly threatened the store owner with a knife before stealing around 123 items, including Pokémon cards and cash. The stolen goods were reportedly worth approximately $94,000.
This arrest marked the third person taken into custody for this incident. Two accomplices had already been detained. What truly shocked the public, however, was the revelation that the newly arrested man was actually the manager of a nearby shop—one that also sells Pokémon and One Piece trading cards.
The owner of the victimized store took to social media to share these details, stating that the suspect’s shop was located just a few blocks away. He also mentioned that more individuals were likely involved and still at large. His post quickly went viral as users reacted with disbelief.
Many online commenters expressed concern about store owners targeting each other. One user remarked, “The hardest part of stealing expensive cards is selling them without getting caught. Owning a shop definitely helps with that.”
Incidents like this Pokémon card store robbery in Japan highlight just how valuable some of these cards have become. For example, a well-preserved Sylveon ex card can sell for over $800 on international markets.
As the Pokémon card craze continues, it’s clear that both collectors and shop owners face growing risks—not just from external thieves, but sometimes from competitors next door.
