Illustrator Caught Using AI and Cheating on his Wife
A popular illustrator has become the center of a controversy involving allegations of using artificial intelligence in their artwork and revelations about an extramarital affair with a cosplayer.
Illustrator Caught Using AI and Cheating on his Wife
The illustrator Majima Leon, known for creating artwork featuring characters from Touhou Project, especially Utsuho Reiuji, is facing accusations of using AI in his illustrations.
Japanese users on Twitter pointed out that certain parts of his illustrations, such as the characters’ fingers and clothing details, appeared artificial, sparking suspicions about AI involvement. In response, Majima shared videos showing his illustration process to prove the authenticity of his work.
However, it was later discovered that one of Majima’s YouTube videos contained prompts used to generate AI images. Under pressure, he admitted to using AI as a reference during his creative process.
Some illustration platforms prohibit AI usage, and users on X accused him of violating these rules. On January 9, Majima announced the suspension of his Skeb account, explaining that he had used AI only as a reference.
He stated:
“I intend to explore more appropriate ways of working with AI moving forward. Although I was ignorant, I now understand that AI tracing is unacceptable. Once again, I sincerely apologize for this incident.”
While using AI isn’t inherently wrong, the controversy arises when artists trace or directly copy AI-generated work without disclosing it, profiting from the result. Many believe transparency is essential in such cases.
Infidelity Revelations
In addition to the AI controversy, Majima’s situation worsened when a cosplayer revealed she had been in an extramarital relationship with the illustrator, who is married. The cosplayer claimed on Twitter that Majima concealed his marital status while engaging in a relationship with her.
The image below shows an event where Majima was with some cosplayers to sell his doujin works. This doesn’t imply that either cosplayer in the image is involved in the situation; it’s merely to illustrate his interactions with cosplayers.
She allegedly shared messages indicating that he insisted on continuing the relationship despite being married, saying:
“He hid that he was married while we were involved. When I said he needed his wife’s consent to continue, he replied it was impossible but still wanted to carry on.”
This revelation intensified public backlash, leading to even harsher criticism of Majima on both personal and professional fronts. In a lengthy apology, Majima stated:
“We sincerely apologize for causing fear among the women involved in this matter and, above all, for committing deplorable acts by hiding my marital status and behaving inappropriately.
My wife, who is unrelated to this matter, is now experiencing health issues due to attacks and defamation against her. If anyone wishes to contact me, I ask that you direct your messages to me and refrain from troubling my wife, who is not involved.
As for the future, I wish to prioritize supporting my wife, whose health has been impacted. Any plans for resuming my activities will be discussed and adjusted with my wife, and I thank everyone for their understanding.”
I attempted to find out more about the cosplayer involved, but no credible sources provided her Twitter handle or photos. Judging by reactions, many Japanese fans don’t mind artists using AI to complement their art. However, due to the “AI police,” such issues are becoming increasingly common.
