Dandadan: Who is Ken Takakura, Momo’s Crush?

Yesterday, the first episode of the anime Dandadan premiered, and the initial reactions have been very positive, as both the story and the two main characters were well received.

However, in this post, I want to talk about the female protagonist, Ayase Momo, and her love interests. Right at the beginning of the first episode, she ends up being dumped by her first boyfriend, a guy with thick eyebrows and a mean look:

While she’s feeling down after her breakup, one of Momo’s friends asks what she saw in that guy since he gave off bad vibes, to which Momo replies:

But who is Ken Takakura?

Ken Takakura was a popular Japanese actor who passed away on November 10, 2014, at the age of 83. He was so famous that even international websites and newspapers reported the news of his death.

Born on February 16, 1931, in Fukuoka, Japan, Takakura joined the Toei studio in 1955 after graduating from Meiji University. His breakthrough role was as a fugitive prisoner in Teruo Ishii’s 1965 hit, “Abashiri Prison,” which was loosely based on Stanley Kramer’s 1958 film “The Defiant Ones.”

The movie spawned a long-running series, while Takakura continued to produce hit after hit for Toei throughout the rest of the decade and beyond. Typically portraying stoic loners who only spring into action after repeated provocation, Takakura became an iconic figure for a generation of Japanese viewers.

So, it’s no surprise that Momo fell for the actor and wants a boyfriend who reminds her of him!
