Nezuko Cosplayer Reprimanded for Wearing Kimono at Event in China

There is a significant aversion in China towards kimonos, seen as symbols of Japanese tradition. This stance is so strict that there have been cases of women being detained for wearing kimonos.

In China, women are not allowed to wear kimonos, even as part of cosplay at anime events. Kimonos are regarded as symbols of oppression in the country.

Recently, a video went viral online showing a cosplayer of the character Nezuko from the popular manga series “Kimetsu no Yaiba” being reprimanded at an anime event in China for wearing a kimono.

Nezuko Kamado is one of the main characters in “Kimetsu no Yaiba,” and her costume includes a pink kimono with petal patterns and a checkered sash.

Nezuko from Demon SlayerUnder normal circumstances, there would be no reason to complain about this cosplay. However, in the video, security personnel approach the young woman, stating that wearing a kimono was not allowed, as per the event organizers’ rules.

Comments emerged both supporting and criticizing the security’s actions:

  • “Saying you can’t wear Japanese anime clothes at an anime convention, who will believe that?”
  • “There are also characters in kimonos in Genshin Impact.”
  • “If they hate Japan so much, they should ban all Japanese elements from the anime event.”
  • “I suggest banning all anime and Japanese elements.”

This incident reached the Japanese, where the comments were as follows:

  • “An anime convention that bans Japanese manga characters, what’s left then?”
  • “If they hadn’t organized the convention in the first place, these problems wouldn’t exist.”
  • “They should just make it a Chinese anime convention.”
  • “What about Western character cosplay then?”
  • “Why continue to hold these conventions if personal taste cannot be expressed?”

This is yet another episode of sharp anti-Japanese sentiment demonstrated in the country, where even cosplays at anime conventions are being severely restricted, preventing fans from expressing their personal tastes.
