3 More Japanese Sites Suspend Payment Methods Due to Adult Content
On January 23, Manga Planet announced that payment provider Stripe had terminated its partnership with the platform due to its distribution of R18 content. Stripe was one of the two available payment options, alongside PayPal.
With Manga Planet’s account banned and suspended from Stripe, subscribers, known as Pass Holders, will now have to rely on PayPal for renewals.
3 More Japanese Sites Suspend Payment Methods Due to Adult Content
Manga Planet, owned by Japanese companies DNP Group and Fantasista, hosts a considerable amount of mature-rated titles. Categories like Spicy Romance and Mature are prominently featured on its homepage. Removing these sections to maintain Stripe’s support was likely not an option for Manga Planet, leading to the split between the companies.
Existing Pass Holders can continue using their subscriptions until they expire, but renewal via Stripe is no longer possible. Similarly, new users will not be able to subscribe using this payment method. Manga Planet now recommends PayPal, the only payment option left.
Issues between manga retailers and payment providers are not new. In 2023, Japan-based services like Melonbooks, Fantia, and DLsite had Visa and Mastercard payments suspended.
Yuzusoft and Komiflo also face payment restrictions
Manga Planet is not the only company affected by payment issues. Recently, Yuzusoft announced that its online store can no longer accept Visa payments, although Mastercard and JCB remain available. The company stated that it will update customers once Visa support is restored.
Similarly, Komiflo reported that Visa payments are no longer accepted due to external factors beyond its control. The platform encourages users to switch to other payment options already available.
The increasing restrictions on payments for platforms offering adult content continue to be a challenge. The future of these services may depend on diversifying payment methods and finding new solutions to prevent such limitations.
