2018 The Year of Anime Comedies?
Many Japanese otakus consider the year 2011 as the best year for anime because it was in 2011 that we had Fate/Zero, Madoka Magica, and Steins;Gate, among other masterpieces.
So, I was surprised when I heard that perhaps 2018 might have been the year of anime comedies! But did you really watch a lot in 2018? Let’s take a look at the comedy anime that premiered that year.
2018 The Year of Anime Comedies?
Comedy Anime in the Winter 2018 Season
At the beginning of the year, in January, we had three strong anime series with great humor. First, we can mention Gintama, which premiered with the “Silver Soul Arc.” I haven’t watched Gintama, and I know it has many comedic moments mixed with serious ones. I can’t comment on that season, but…
We also had the debut of Pop Team Epic on January 7th of that year. With its 12 episodes, it left almost everyone wondering why they were watching it. In addition to these two mentioned anime series, the second season of Saiki Kusuo premiered on January 17th, bringing more of the psychic boy’s madness.
Comedy Anime in the Spring 2018 Season
If we look at it in terms of quantity, this was a weak season for comedy anime, but if we consider quality, Hinamatsuri more than made up for it.
The anime tells the story of a Yakuza who ends up taking care of a superpowered girl with a rather complicated personality. The stories told in this anime are very hilarious.
Comedy Anime in the Summer 2018 Season
I must say that in the summer season, they went all out with comedy anime. For example, the first season of Jashin-chan premiered in it on July 10th.
On July 4th, the crazy Back Street Girls debuted, which is about three yakuza members who undergo an operation to become women at their boss’s command after failing a mission.
Gintama returned for the second part of its Silver Soul arc, but the real highlights were the insanely funny Grand Blue and Asobi Asobase.
Grand Blue is seen as one of the best comedy anime made in recent years, and what can we say about Asobi Asobase, with a teacher getting disappointed after licking a liquid from the floor only to find out it wasn’t his student’s urine?
Comedy Anime in the Fall 2018 Season
To wrap up the year, there weren’t many comedy anime in this season. I think we can highlight the joke that was the anime version of Toaru Majutsu no Index III.
And there you have it, the top comedy anime of 2018. So, can we consider this the best year for comedy anime, or was there another stronger year?
