Why did Demon Lord Retry changed most of the Voice Actors?
The anime Demon Lord Retry! has finally returned with its second season, Demon Lord Retry R!, which premiered on September 28, 2024. However, the production process was riddled with obstacles. In a recent interview, Kurone Kanzaki, the creator of the series, admitted that “it’s a miracle it’s even being broadcast.”
Why did Demon Lord Retry changed most of the Voice Actors?
Kanzaki shared the interview on X (formerly Twitter), where he explained the struggles of releasing the sequel five years after the original season aired in 2019. He mentioned that discussions about a second season began immediately after the first one concluded, but production was delayed for four years, primarily due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Apart from the delays, Kanzaki revealed difficulties in securing funding and reassembling the original cast. “It was physically impossible to reunite the entire original cast,” he said, explaining that many of the actors had become prominent voice actors with fully booked schedules. As a result, the studio decided to recast the entire ensemble.
One major success, however, was securing the return of Kenjiro Tsuda to voice the protagonist, Hakuto Kunai. “I strongly insisted that Tsuda-san be included since he is the voice of the main character, and somehow my request was granted,” Kanzaki shared.
Kenjiro Tsuda is a well-known figure in the anime industry, recognized for roles such as Kento Nanami in Jujutsu Kaisen, Tatsu in The Way of the Househusband, and Hannes in Attack on Titan. Kanzaki expressed deep gratitude for Tsuda’s return and his excitement about the new cast, while also acknowledging the contributions of the original team.
Demon Lord Retry! originally debuted as a light novel in 2016 and was adapted into a manga in 2017 with artwork by Amaru Minotake. The first anime season aired in 2019, produced by Ekachi Epilka. Despite the continuation of the light novel and manga, the anime went on hiatus until Demon Lord Retry R! debuted in 2024.
Both seasons are now available for streaming on Crunchyroll, Hulu, and Prime Video, with the third episode of the new season scheduled to air on October 19, 2024.
