Tales of the Abyss Dev Celebrates 20th Anniversary Running Marathon as Luke, Reveals Chaotic Origin of Mieu

In 2025, Tales of the Abyss turns 20 years old — and game developer Kenji Anabuki decided to honor this milestone in a very unique way: by running the Tokyo Marathon dressed as Luke fon Fabre, the game’s main character.

This isn’t Anabuki’s first cosplay marathon. Known for his work on several Tales Of titles and as the director of Scarlet Nexus, he has previously run in costume as Yuito Sumeragi and Kasane Randall, both from Scarlet Nexus.

A Tribute From Creator to Creation

In a special feature for Japanese outlet Denfaminicogamer, Anabuki reflected on the legacy of Tales of the Abyss, shared personal insights, and revealed the chaotic truth behind the creation of the game’s mascot character, Mieu — a character beloved by fans and often mocked in-game.

As dungeon designer on Abyss (after doing similar work in Tales of Symphonia), Anabuki said he learned from past feedback. While the dungeons in Symphonia were considered exhausting, he tried to create more balanced and engaging designs for Abyss.

But his biggest contribution? A spontaneous idea that would reshape the story’s development.

Tales of the Abyss 20th anniversary: Mieu’s Unexpected Debut

During development, Anabuki proposed replacing the usual Sorcerer’s Ring with a cute animal-like creature who would carry the item. This came as a surprise to screenwriter Miyajima Takumi, who had already been writing the game’s script.

The idea caused quite a stir — forcing Miyajima to rewrite major parts of the story — but eventually led to the creation of Mieu. In a later interview, Miyajima revealed that Anabuki himself was the real-life inspiration for Mieu, making the character’s energetic and quirky nature even more fitting.

Cosplay, Marathon, and Devotion to the Fans

At an annual X (formerly Twitter) Space event where developers and fans celebrate Tales of the Abyss, Anabuki announced he would be running the 2025 Tokyo Marathon as Luke — a heartfelt tribute to the game’s 20th anniversary.

According to Anabuki, it’s essential that creators openly express their love for the games and characters they helped bring to life. It’s also a meaningful way to thank longtime fans who continue to cherish those experiences decades later.

By running in Luke’s outfit, Anabuki not only celebrates Tales of the Abyss but also deepens the emotional bond between creators, characters, and players.
