Sony is in talks to acquire Kadokawa
According to Reuters Japan, Sony is in talks to acquire Kadokawa, a giant in Japan’s anime and manga industry, according to two sources who claim that negotiations are ongoing. If the acquisition is confirmed, the deal could be finalized within weeks.
Kadokawa is a major player in the anime, manga, and light novel sectors. The company also owns game studios such as FromSoftware, the creators of Dark Souls and Elden Ring, as well as Spike Chunsoft, Acquire, and Gotcha Gotcha Games.
Sony would gain ownership of anime franchises like ReZero, Oshi no Ko, Overlord, Alya, Mushoku Tensei, and more. Of course, this information should be treated as a rumor until official announcements are made.
Sony already owns Crunchyroll, which it acquired in 2021, and buying Kadokawa would further consolidate its monopoly in the anime industry.
