K-POP Idol MV Plagiarizes Urusei Yatsura Art! Stealing art is a matter that causes significant issues for those who have copied online, and the most recent case involves a K-pop idol named Jeon Somi. A bit of background on the idol: her mother is South Korean, and her father is Canadian.

It was discovered that Jeon Somi ended up “stealing” art from Urusei Yatsura, and it was the Koreans themselves who discovered this. Jeon Somi released a new music video (MV) for her song “Fast Forward” from her new album “Game Plan.” The MV featured a character that bore a strong resemblance to Lum:

Urusei Yatsura seems to be quite popular in Korea, as the Korean audience quickly identified that the character created for the MV had been traced from one of Lum’s visuals.

If you haven’t noticed the similarities in the comparison above, take a look at the two overlaid images:

At the time, the reactions from Koreans were as follows:

“Do you think they bought the rights?”
“It’s not just copying the style, it’s tracing… lol”
“Well, Rumiko Takahashi is very famous”
“Ugh, where is their conscience?”
“I thought they had bought or signed some contract because the artist is famous”
“They seem to think Rumiko and Adachi’s drawings are public resources or something… If people need something with a retro style, there are so many who copy the works of these two artists”

“Apologies Issued” – MV is modified

Then people began to criticize the unauthorized use of Lum’s art from Urusei Yatsura in the MV, and the video was altered to remove the character. Jeon Somi’s agency, THEBLACKLABEL, released a statement offering formal apologies for the plagiarism allegations.

“We reviewed the issue as soon as we became aware of the criticism that the animation in Fast Forward resembled that of a character from another animation,” they said.

“We have decided to remove and alter the scenes in question. We will replace them as soon as possible and take all necessary measures,” they continued. “We offer our sincere apologies for not being more careful with the work and promise to work more cautiously to avoid making the same mistake in the future.”
