Woman: “I thought CLANNAD was for men. I underestimated this anime.”

Woman I thought CLANNAD was for men. I underestimated this anime.

CLANNAD… Based on a visual novel by Key, its first anime season was released in 2007 with a total of 23 episodes. CLANNAD After Story followed in 2008 with another 24 episodes and brought everyone to tears.

Including the woman who recently went viral — because here’s the thing: CLANNAD ended up being distributed for free on YouTube some time ago, giving new anime fans (after all, Gen Z LOVES anime) the chance to watch this classic.

And one woman’s reactions completely blew up on Japanese social media!

Woman: “I thought CLANNAD was for men. I underestimated this anime.”

Shall we take a look at her tweets and follow her emotional journey?

“I’d always wanted to watch it, but never got around to it. I finally watched CLANNAD since it was streaming for free on YouTube. Now I’m crying so much that I have a headache and can’t even sleep. Damn… I thought it was an emotional story made more for men, so I didn’t take it seriously. I was so wrong. CLANNAD is life. It touched me so deeply—more than pulling the strings of my heart, it was like it punched holes straight through it.”

Woman I thought CLANNAD was for men. I underestimated this anime.

“Aaaahhh, my heaaaad aaahhh, I’ve cried so much I’m completely drained… I wish I had watched this sooner… If I had found this anime a little earlier in life, maybe my life would’ve taken a different path… But maybe it’s good I found it now too… The voice acting was just incredible… My heart is overflowing…”

“Honestly, I don’t know if I’ll be able to recover anytime soon. Why did it hit me this hard? Was it Nakamura-san’s fault? The emotional scenes in the anime and the voice acting were so impactful I started taking notes here and there… But now, suddenly, CLANNAD didn’t just enter my top list—it went straight to my Hall of Fame. Maybe it was a matter of timing… Maybe this was fate too.”

“Ugh… the impact of the ‘CLANNAD shock’ is huge… I’ve already cried several times this morning… The dialogue still echoes in my ears… All those precious moments keep flashing back… Damn, my eyes are so swollen they won’t go down… Ahh, Yuuichi Nakamura — no, Sir Yuuichi Nakamura. I already respected him, but now it’s on another level. He’s a god. I can’t casually call him ‘Yuukyan’ anymore…”

“Buhyahhh!!! After crying over CLANNAD, I looked in the mirror and my face looked like a boxer after a match — both eyes super swollen and crushed lol”

“Damn—Episode 5 of GQuuuuuuX yesterday was so fun I thought it might help me forget CLANNAD a bit, but then the After Story ending theme started looping in my head again… MY EYES STARTED TEARING UP AGAIN.”

“Anyway, when Mitsuhisa Midorikawa started voice acting, it was just way too amazing!!! I knew it, I’m a Midorikawa fan, the master of Fushigi Yugi! And of course, Namikawa too!! And rewatching CLANNAD, I realized how excellent Yoshino’s performance was. Thank you Tomoya and everyone for supporting me until now… I cried…”

“Aaaahhh the opening theme of CLANNAD After Story keeps playing in my head nonstop and I can’t focus on work 〜 my mind is a mess 〜 Tomoya, Nakamura Yuuichi’s voice — so soft yet full of pain — pierces my heart and makes me cry again 〜〜〜 Just yesterday, hearing Nakamura casually laughing on a voice actor radio show, I thought that might reset me, but…”

“Noooo even the CLANNAD specials are streaming for free until tomorrow so I need to hurry up and watch, but just seeing the thumbnail already makes me want to cry. I’ve become someone who cries just from looking… This is the ‘CLANNAD shock’…!! It’s something that goes beyond emotions and becomes almost traumatic.
…And Tomoya, and that sigh from Nakamura… Just that alone traps me and I can’t let go.”

Man, she really got DESTROYED by CLANNAD! Who would’ve thought? Has any anime ever done that to you? Personally, I watched CLANNAD and thought it was very sad and very good, but I’ve never watched After Story, and I prefer to keep it that way. I know After Story is even sadder — and that’s exactly why I don’t want to watch it. I don’t want to emotionally wreck myself.
