Fans Hated Netflix Kakegurui – Trailer Gets Massively Disliked
Yesterday, Netflix released the first trailer for its upcoming BET series, which is “loosely based” on the Kakegurui manga. Unlike the original, Netflix’s Kakegurui is set in the United States, not Japan. The story follows a Japanese exchange student who arrives at an American high school and turns everything upside down.
Since this is an American adaptation, most characters are only loosely inspired by their original versions — something that fans hated right away. For example, the popular Facebook page Hikachu shared three side-by-side comparisons of key characters from the anime, the Japanese live-action adaptation, and Netflix’s new version:
Suzui
Mary
Midari
Although the setting has changed to the U.S., it seems some characters were still kept — just not in the way fans were hoping for.
Fans Hated Netflix Kakegurui – Trailer Gets Massively Disliked
The BET series trailer, now dubbed “Netflix’s Kakegurui”, currently has over 24,000 views — but the reception has been overwhelmingly negative. As of this post, the video has 663 likes and over 3,000 dislikes!
Let’s take a look at some of the fan reactions:
-
“Nobody asked for this”
-
“After doing One Piece right, why go backward like this?”
-
“WE DIDN’T ASK FOR THIS”
-
“Netflix really hates money”
-
“Man… I’m British and I feel insulted. Not just for me but for the Japanese too. They even removed Kakegurui from the title. What the hell is ‘BET’?”
-
“I just want Season 3 — what even is this?”
-
“What happened to Kakegurui?”
-
“This looks like another Death Note adaptation disaster”
-
“All 500 members of today’s woke audience will love this”
-
“Looks like a dating scene on Bluesky”
-
“I’m getting Dragon Ball Evolution vibes”
-
“Sometimes you have to lose money… to lose even more money – probably Netflix”
-
“Had to cleanse my eyes with the Japanese trailer after watching this”
-
“Just watch the anime, folks”
-
“Even JAV studios did better than this”
-
“Can we file this in the trash already?”
-
“They clearly learned nothing from Cowboy Bebop”
-
“Nobody watched Kakegurui for the gambling – they watched it for the waifus. Where are the waifus?”
And the criticisms just keep coming. How will this series fare when it launches on May 15?
Why Did Netflix Create a New Kakegurui Series?
Kakegurui remains one of Netflix’s most popular anime titles. We already have two anime seasons, a spin-off anime focused on Mary, two Japanese live-action movies, and a Japanese live-action series.
Still, Netflix wanted more. Since a third season of the Kakegurui anime likely isn’t in production right now (some theories suggest the staff is busy with other projects), Netflix decided to move ahead with a new live-action adaptation to fill the gap.
