Explaining Why Eris Left Rudeus in Mushoku Tensei
We’ve just released a post explaining the reasons behind Sara’s rudeness towards Rudeus when they first met. Now, in this post, we’ll explain why Eris left Rudeus at the end of the first season.
Please note that THIS IS NOT A SPOILER if you’ve already finished the first season, as the anime attempted to explain it, but I don’t think it was well done.
Explaining Why Eris Left Rudeus
In the final moments of the first season of Mushoku Tensei, Eris and Rudeus have their first intimate encounter. The next day, Rudeus wakes up to find that Eris has left, leaving a rather harsh farewell letter.
The anime then shows Eris with short hair, mentioning that she found Rudeus’s hands small, and that she wants to train to be able to protect him
Okay, that’s the explanation of why Eris left Rudeus, but in my opinion, the anime didn’t handle this scene very well, while the manga did.
Let’s see how it’s portrayed in the manga.
The first sign Eris shows is when Ruijerd bids farewell to both of them, and he mentions that he finds Eris strong. She replies that she’s not a warrior, that she couldn’t defeat Orsted, and that she doesn’t plan to see him again.
Then we have their first night together, and while Eris and Rudeus were being intimate, they held each other’s hand. Eris enjoyed the night, she really did, but she noticed that her hand was larger than Rudeus’s (remember, Eris is older than him).
By holding his hand and seeing that it was small, she remembered that he is younger, and she felt like she was taking advantage of him all this time.
She then feels really bad about it and considers that if she continues as she is, she will always depend on Rudeus. So, she believes that she’s not the right person for him.
She decides to leave, train, and become stronger, capable of protecting him and defeating Orsted. Having witnessed Rudeus seemingly die in front of her was incredibly traumatizing for her, especially since she loves him
Eris then writes that letter, making sure Rudeus will understand her. I want to remind you that Rudeus was teaching Eris how to read and write, and she’s not good at writing, so Rudeus misinterpreted the true meaning of her letter.
While he was sleeping, she bids him farewell with a kiss, saying she loves him, and when she returns, they will truly become a family.
If you want to read the full explanation from Eris in the manga, just read chapter 52 of the Mushoku Tensei manga, it will make much more sense than what the anime showed, and this is a concern because the anime is cutting the perspective of other characters.
