Slayers Illustrator Proves He Didn’t Use AI

A while back, we posted here that the illustrator Rui Araizumi appeared with a completely different style from his usual one, and some people accused him of using AI.

Rui Araizumi is the original and currently Slayers Illustrator, and his style has always been, how can I describe it, very ’90s, even in current times as you can see below:

The illustration that sparked the debate can be seen below, people found it very different from his usual style (the one above), and then accused him of using AI:

Rui Araizumi took part in Comiket 102, selling some products he made with his illustrations. In the photo below, you can see an artwork he created of the character Lina from the Slayers series in his new style:

As this is not his known style, folks started accusing him of using AI to sell products at Comiket, remembering that his style, even years ago and until recently, looked like this:

Without directly addressing the accusations, he simply uploaded a video from the files of the above artworks, showing the layers of the illustrations and how the process of constructing the two images was.

“The cover of my doujin, I drew it carefully! Here’s a video of the layers from the sketch that shows everything clearly, seeing the order of my layers is kind of embarrassing.”

Watching the video he posted, you can see that he individually shaded Lina’s hair, and similar techniques applied to other parts of the illustration. Araizumi also shared a video and prints of Lina’s kimono artwork:

“Here’s the illustration used for the fan, it’s embarrassing, but here’s the video showing the layers and screenshots. From the sketch to the linework, from painting to line coloring, you should be able to tell from this, right?”

Reactions After Rui Araizumi’s Videos

So, ladies and gentlemen, is Rui Araizumi guilty of using AI or innocent? After the posts you’ve just seen, the accusations of AI usage have ceased.

Some users apologized to him, being honest, but many just deleted their accusatory comments. It’s worth mentioning that they uploaded his illustrations to sites that “identify” if the art was made by AI or not, and all analyses scored above 90%.

Arai stated that they’ve documented the most serious accusations made against him; what he’ll do about these individuals remains unknown.
