Taiki Nishimura Reveals How Anime Can Reflect the True Intentions of the Original Author
Taiki Nishimura is a seasoned anime director who has contributed to the production of several popular series, including Date A Live, Ergo Proxy, Aldnoah Zero, Medabots, My-HiME, Boruto, and many others.
Typically hired as an episode director, he often oversees specific episodes of various anime. However, Nishimura recently shared an intriguing story on Twitter about a unique situation that occurred during an anime production.
Taiki Nishimura Reveals How Anime Can Reflect the True Intentions of the Original Author
On January 17, Nishimura took to Twitter to recount an interesting incident. During the dubbing process of a “certain anime,” one of the seiyuus (voice actors) pointed out that the character’s line in the script was different from what was written in the original manga.
This reveals an interesting detail: the seiyuu had read the source material, demonstrating their dedication to understanding the work they were involved in. However, the story took an unexpected turn.
Nishimura responded to the seiyuu by saying they would prioritize the original material and decided to consult the author of the source material. The author revealed, “This is a line that was modified by the editor. The line in the anime script is what I actually want the character to say.”
Ultimately, the anime aired with the character delivering a line that differed from the manga, reflecting the author’s true intentions. Nishimura concluded his story by saying, “These things happen.”
This anecdote highlights how manga and light novel adaptations don’t always align perfectly with the original author’s vision. Sometimes, editorial decisions in the publication process alter the content. Anime adaptations can give authors a chance to restore or adjust elements that were changed against their wishes.
This insight into the creative process underscores the complexity of anime production and the collaborative effort required to bring a story to life.
