Cosplayer Becomes the Reason for Couple Separation
We’ve already published a few times here about gravure idol and cosplayer Umi Shinonome, who’s been getting a lot of attention lately for her beauty and charm. She often posts videos on her YouTube channel, where she shares her otaku interests.
At a past event, Umi Shinonome went viral thanks to her cosplay of Mary from the game NIKKE. Numerous Japanese fans commented on her appearance, and she undoubtedly gained many new followers. Perhaps one of these new fans was the husband of a certain desperate wife?
Cosplayer Becomes the Reason for Couple Separation
Recently, tweets supposedly from a secret account of a married woman went viral on Japanese social media. In these tweets, the woman expressed her frustration upon discovering that her husband had become a fan of cosplayer Umi Shinonome.
To provide some context, some Japanese people use “secret accounts” on social media, where they post about personal matters anonymously. This wife made several tweets about her husband and Umi Shinonome.
In her tweets, the wife wrote:
- “My husband has fallen for a gravure idol and has secretly started attending her events. He buys her merchandise… I was devastated to discover this, especially when I looked at how my body has changed after childbirth. Of course, he prefers someone beautiful.”
In another post, the wife recounted a conversation with a friend:
- “Today, while talking with a friend about something else, I mentioned the gravure idol my husband is a fan of. When I said her name, my friend looked at me and said, ‘But she’s ugly. You’re way more beautiful, and besides, your husband’s not all that attractive either, so don’t worry.’ Husband, are you listening? My friend understands better than you do!”
She also vented:
- “It’s not her fault, but my husband is so into her that we’re considering divorce, and I’m the one left caring for a small child.”
Finally, she decided she’d attend one of Umi’s events to see things firsthand:
- “I’ve decided to go to the next event, not because I want to see her, but because sitting here stewing over this won’t get me anywhere!”
By using Umi Shinonome’s official hashtag, the wife drew the attention of the cosplayer herself, who responded, “Why are you using my hashtag? Do you want me to do something about this?” Following Umi’s comment, the wife deleted her account.
After Umi Shinonome’s response, the woman deleted her account. Let’s see how Japanese netizens reacted:
- “It’s not that the family fell apart because he got hooked on this. It’s because they couldn’t accept what he likes.”
- “Laughing because she’s being courted by a male friend.”
- “Soon, she’ll dive into feminism and start saying gravure idols should be banned.”
- “Don’t use the hashtag.”
- “At first, I thought she was being discreet by saying ‘a certain gravure idol,’ but then she added the hashtag, so I don’t get what she wants.”
- “He didn’t spend so much that it impacted family finances, right? If not, just let it go.”
- “Is she going to yell at her husband at the event?”
- “Hinting at a relationship with a male friend is worse than a guy going to see gravure idols…”
- “I’m attractive enough that a male friend called me cute and maybe thinks something more of me”—that’s what she really wants to say.
- “I believe putting someone down by calling them ugly just because you don’t like them is a problematic stance. Worse yet, framing it as if it were a male friend’s opinion rather than her own is very unpleasant.”
What do you think about this situation?
