They’re Shipping Japanese with Korean Girls
Did you think that Brazilian Miku was the only art trend these days? No, no, several artists are currently drawing images of yuri couples, shipping Japanese women with Korean women! Let’s understand what’s going on!
As many well know, Yuri is a genre of Japanese media focused on intimate relationships between female characters in anime, manga, etc. There are many famous anime series that bring this theme, such as Adachi to Shimamura, Citrus, Bloom Into You, and so on.
They’re Shipping Japanese with Korean Girls: How It All Started
Recently, a heated discussion on a Japanese forum resulted in a curious trend that mixes nationalities and cultures: Yuri between Japanese and Korean women.
It all started with a comment from a South Korean woman on a Japanese forum:
“Now I understand why Japanese idols are so thin. In Japan, the thinner and more slender a man is, the more handsome he is considered and the more careful he is about his appearance. In our country, fat men are extremely criticized and not considered worthy people.”
A Japanese user’s response brought a new perspective to the conversation:
“It’s sad to see how some people in South Korea have such an idealized image of Japanese men. No matter the country, they all have their charm.”
The debate, however, escalated when the South Korean woman responded:
“Don’t worry, we only like handsome men. Don’t you dare fall in love with a Korean man; they are fat, don’t take care of themselves and expect their wives to do everything.”
From there, an idea emerged that gained widespread support: romantic relationships between Japanese and Korean women.
The New Yuri Wave
The suggestion gained traction when one user asked:
“Please, someone make a Yuri manga with a strong Korean girl and a cute Japanese girl.”
This quickly turned into a wave of online art and commentary, promoting the idea that if men are considered problematic, perhaps Japanese and Korean women should be in relationships.
Several artists then began creating fan art of this type, with some even including Chinese women in the mix:
And finally, let’s look at the reactions to yuri between Japanese and Korean women:
“The day that profiles that usually complain about discrimination started to turn homosexuality into content, using labels like ethnicity to express their hatred of men.”
“Collaboration between sushi woman (Japanese) and kimchi woman (Korean) is the best!”
“Isn’t there a BL romance between Japanese and Korean men?”
“Korean women are better than short, low-income Japanese men.”
“This is too much victimization, it seems like they think men are to blame for everything.”
“It’s amazing how Korean women say “don’t date Korean men” and Japanese women say “don’t date Japanese men”, and this leads to the conclusion that “there is no choice but for Japanese and Korean women to date each other”. Thus, a competition of approaches between Korean women and Japanese women begins, and Japanese women start tweeting about exciting experiences they have had with Korean women in the past.”
“That’s not bad.”
“The role of Japanese men is to be the dirty old man who interrupts the Yuri between Chinese and Korean women.”
“There are no illustrations that interest men, so they don’t need to look. By the way, men stay out of it, it’s unpleasant.”
“Among women in conservative Confucian countries with strong sexism, some may have internalized this sexism due to excessive brainwashing in their countries and end up rejecting other women. It seems like a minefield… (It’s like trying to get a daughter-in-law and her classic mother-in-law together). But recently that has changed, so maybe it’s not so much of a problem.”
“It’s beautiful because it’s a cartoon, but the live-action version must be terrible.”
“Korean women are spoiled and act like princesses, and that’s terrible. Doing that without permission is horrible.”
“What are we going to do with the remaining men?”
“Oh, it’s just otaku content? I thought real people were involved, I was surprised.”
“Ahhh~~ I love the elegant women of China and the amazing women of South Korea. I really, really love them all. Let’s stop fighting between Japan, China, and South Korea… There are so many wonderful things… Let’s all get married and live in peace. Here, at least, we’re all getting along, aren’t we?”
“There’s no choice but to ride this great yuri wave.”
The yuri genre is really popular within the anime and manga industry. And a yuri story between a Japanese woman and a Korean woman would be something really unique and special to read and would make a lot of anime and manga fans excited.
