There are many isekai anime out there, but have you ever wondered which is the worst isekai anime? If we consider OVAs, the title goes to Byston Well Monogatari from 1997, but for TV anime, that title belongs to Conception.
Conception: The Worst Isekai Anime of All Time
On October 10, 2018, the isekai anime Conception, animated by the studio Gonzo, premiered. It is based on a game by the developer Spike Chunsoft.
The story revolves around Itsuki Yuge, who receives a surprise from his friend Mahiru Konatsuki. Both are just high school students, but Mahiru is pregnant with Itsuki’s child! After this revelation, a portal opens, and the two are transported to the world of Granvania. In this new world, “impurities” are causing disturbances in the stars, leading to chaos.
Itsuki Yuge, revealed to be the one who will meet the Star Maidens, is seen as the world’s last hope. To combat the evil, he needs to create “star children” with the maidens, meaning he has to have children with them!
The original game is a JRPG where you need to form relationships with the 12 girls known as the “Star Maidens” and “produce” star children, which will be used to fight monsters.
The anime already had a huge potential for mockery. For example, look at the episode titles of Conception:

My Anime List Rating
On My Anime List, Conception has a rating of 4.59, the lowest among all isekai anime, earning the title of the worst isekai anime in history. Looking at the reviews, we find several hilarious comments:
“It should be called Deception, not Conception.”
“Terribly bad.”
“Don’t waste your time on this anime.”
“Super bizarre and generic… I forced myself to watch 5 episodes to make sure it wasn’t that bad (I regret the time I wasted on this thing).”
Is the Game Any Good?
Personally, I have never played the original game but own Conception II (yes, they made a sequel with new characters). I do want to try the first Conception, but I don’t own it yet.
Looking at the reviews on Steam, the game doesn’t seem to be bad, with positive ratings and a score of 67 on Open Critic. Here are some reviews on Steam:
