What do you need to watch before Madoka Magica Walpurgisnacht Rising
A year ago, we had the announcement of the long-awaited 4th Madoka film. The film is named Madoka Magica Walpurgisnacht Rising and serves as a sequel to Rebellion.
Recently, during the Aniplex Online Fest event, a new trailer, a fresh visual, and the release window for Madoka Magica Walpurgisnacht Rising were unveiled.
First, let’s take a look at the new trailer:
The visual:
Madoka Magica Walpurgisnacht Rising is set to premiere in Japanese theaters in the winter of 2024, though many believe it will be closer to the end of the coming year.
What do you need to watch before Madoka Magica Walpurgisnacht Rising?
Madoka Magica is an original anime, not adapted from manga, a game, or a novel. Therefore, before diving into the 4th film, it’s essential to watch the 2011 anime series, which consists of 12 episodes.
After completing the anime, you’ll notice that we refer to Madoka Magica Walpurgisnacht Rising as the 4th film because it is indeed the fourth installment in the series. However, if you’ve already watched the anime, you only need to watch the 3rd film, titled Madoka Magica Rebellion.
The first and second films of Madoka Magica summarize the events of the anime, adding some scenes and animation improvements. By watching the anime, you get the complete story.
There’s also a fan-made edit that combines the 12 anime episodes with some scenes from the films, but I don’t have information on where to find it.
In 2020, we did get a new Madoka series called Magia Record. However, it is based on a mobile game and has no connection to the main series storyline. Therefore, you don’t need to watch it.
Japanese Comparisons: Madoka vs. Kimetsu no Yaiba
An interesting fact is that the Madoka Magica Walpurgisnacht Rising trailer on YouTube has reached 1.2 million views, while on Twitter, it garnered 24.6 million views, showcasing the incredible popularity of the series.
Furthermore, the Japanese community made a comparison that may not be entirely fair. They compared the Twitter post of the new Madoka trailer with the announcement of Kimetsu no Yaiba’s Mugen Train film. Madoka’s post received more likes and shares than Kimetsu no Yaiba, even though the latter is one of the recent anime greats.
