Super Mario Bros 1993 to be re-released in Japanese cinemas
The 1993 live-action Super Mario Bros will be re-released in cinemas and in 4K starting from September 15th of this year in Japan.
The film is considered a complete failure, both critically and financially, and many Japanese fans of the franchise were surprised by this rather crazy news.
Super Mario Bros 1993 to be re-released in Japanese cinemas
All of this is to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Hollywood adaptation of the famous Nintendo series, Super Mario Bros 1993.
The film, known to the Japanese as Super Mario: Goddess of the Magic Empire, will be shown in remastered 4K format in cinemas throughout Japan starting from September 15th.
The adventure comedy film of Super Mario Bros 1993 follows the Mario brothers, Mario and Luigi, who work as plumbers in Brooklyn, as they venture into a post-apocalyptic parallel universe dominated by reptiles called Dinohattan, to rescue Princess Daisy and save Earth from an imminent invasion.
Nintendo granted the producers of this film complete creative freedom, resulting in a wild story that has little to do with the original story and setting of the Mario series. The actor who played Mario at the time described the film as “the worst thing he ever did” and a “nightmare of epic proportions.”
