Set to open on July 14th of this year, Hayao Miyazaki’s new film How Do You Live will not have a trailer, nor will another visual be released.

Everything that’s been released about the film, which is the visual below, is literally all we’ll have to know about it before it opens on July 14th!

How Do You Live? doesn’t have any kind of marketing being done, below is everything we know about Hayao Miyazaki’s new movie:

  • It’s a fantasy story
  • It has the same title as a Japanese book from 1937, however it is not an adaptation of that book (but takes elements from it).
  • It comes out in Japanese theaters on July 14th.

And we have the poster above, and that’s it! Characters? Local? Voice actors? Another look? ANYTHING! And this is calculated, but then why is Ghibli doing this? Hiding all information of How Do You Live?

In a recent interview with Manabu Shintani, Studio Ghibli producer Toshio Suzuki revealed the reason for having virtually no information about How Do You Live?.

Basically the reason is this, they want to do something different, because doing the same thing over and over again is boring, and they think that will be good for the film industry as well. Obviously there are fans who want a synopsis, a trailer to decide whether to watch a movie or not, but about that Suzuki said:

“Okay, but why? Just so you can go see the movie and confirm something you already know? If that’s how it’s going to happen, I think a poster is enough.”

Suzuki then compares their attitude to a famous American film coming out soon (he didn’t say which film it is): “There’s an American film… How Do You Live? time. They released 3 trailers for the movie, and released them one at a time, if you watch the 3 trailers, you already know everything that happens in the movie. So how do people feel about it? having people who, after watching all the trailers, don’t want to go to the movies anymore, so I wanted to do the opposite of that.”

Suzuki says that Miyazaki asked if it would end well with only 1 poster released for the film: “Is this plan okay? Without doing any marketing?”, Suzuki said that eventually Miyazaki agreed with this idea.
