How Did Nanahoshi Use Magic to Defend Herself from Sylphie?

This is a question I’ve seen some people genuinely asking on the internet after the premiere of episode 9 of Mushoku Tensei: how did Nanahoshi use magic to defend herself from Sylphie, who came at her right after she mentioned she can’t use magic?

How Did Nanahoshi Use Magic to Defend Herself from Sylphie?

In episode 9 of Mushoku Tensei, we get a closer look at Nanahoshi Shizuka, a girl from Earth who was summoned to the world of Mushoku Tensei.

Unfortunately, she can’t use magic because she comes from a world where magic doesn’t exist. However, in the same episode where Nanahoshi says she can’t use magic, she summons a magical shield to defend herself from Sylphie’s attacks.

How did Nanahoshi defend herself from Sylphie at that moment? Well, anime doesn’t always rely on words to explain every detail; sometimes, it’s necessary to pay attention to the actions characters take.

In previous scenes, we see a close-up of Nanahoshi’s hands as she places some rings on her fingers. Despite not having magic herself, she can use  items with magic since they possess their own magic.

How Did Nanahoshi Use Magic to Defend Herself from Sylphie

Nanahoshi has 3 magic rings, each with a specific effect. The first ring, on her index finger, prevents magic from working near her, which is why Sylphie couldn’t use her magic and went after her manually.

The second ring, on her middle finger, can create a barrier to protect her. We see it in action against Sylphie once again. The third ring, on her ring finger, allows Orsted to track Nanahoshi’s location.

This explains the magical barrier Nanahoshi used to prevent Sylphie from harming her. As you can see, she used 3 rings for her defense. Animes don’t always need to explain details with words; often, small actions suffice.
