Dungeon Meshi Author Says Laios Is Normal

Dungeon Meshi Author Says Laios Is Normal

The author of Dungeon Meshi was recently interviewed by ANN and answered questions about topics that many fans have decided in their heads are canon for the story.

For example, there is a large fan base that believes that Laios has autism, or that the scenes of Senshi in his underwear are for fanservice, etc.

However, the answers given by the author are not what these fans expected and, in addition, the interview has received a lot of criticism for being poorly done with embarrassing questions.

One of the questions is about whether the author imagined Laios being autistic when she created him, to which she responded with: “In my understanding, Laios is a very normal person, there is nothing special about him and anyone can relate to a person like him.”

Another point raised is about Senshi, in many scenes he ends up showing his underwear and a good part of the anime’s fans love to see Senshi’s underwear and consider it as fanservice to “combat” female fanservice in other anime.

However, the author doesn’t think so, she said: “So the term “fanservice” feels a little off to me, but I have seen people talking about Senshi’s sex appeal. The reason I came up with this idea [of showing Senshi in his underwear] is that when I was little, I used to live in this city where there was an old man hanging his laundry while just wearing his underwear. It was awkward for me, and I really didn’t want to look at him. But from his perspective, he really didn’t care. He didn’t care what other people thought. I found that vibe interesting”.

And another point raised is about the friendship between Marcille and Falin, many are those who ship the two in a romantic relationship, the author said this about the relationship between the two: “When I draw my manga, I try to develop it differently than the fans’ expectations. If I care too much about how the fans will react, I think the story might become less fun or interesting. So, I try not to think too much about how readers will react. In general, I’ll just leave the reader’s imagination.”

On the internet, reactions are from fans of the anime and manga debating the author’s answers and entering into discussions about the interview, which according to some, “tried to make the author confirm Laios’ supposed autism” among other topics.
