Destiny Lovers Manga Criticized for Netorare scene
Hey, should you warn if your story contains netorare? This has been a topic on the site before, discussing whether people would like to be informed if a manga involves netorare or not. Now, Destiny Lovers manga is facing criticism for introducing netorare into its storyline after years of publication.
Destiny Lovers Manga Criticized for Netorare scene
Destiny Lovers is a manga that began serialization in 2018, concluded with 8 volumes in 2020, and continued its sequel in the same year, ongoing to date.
The manga is a collaborative effort, with Kazutaka handling the story and Tomohiro Kai providing the art. Currently, the manga is receiving considerable backlash for incorporating netorare into the storyline after several years of publication.
Let’s start with the synopsis of Destiny Lovers manga:
Takuma Misato, who has a crush on a classmate, is suddenly kidnapped in the infirmary when he goes for a second check-up. When he wakes up, he’s tied to a bed and forced to do “something” by a beautiful nurse he doesn’t know!
It’s a mysterious hospital where men are locked in an isolation ward and tended to by beautiful women! Where the heck are we? And what is the purpose of these beauties? Thus begins the love game between a woman and a man with their lives at stake!
Basically, in the recent chapters, a netorare storyline unfolded, with the girl who is the protagonist’s love interest being stolen by another man.
This angered readers, who began criticizing the manga for including netorare, especially after Tomohiro, the manga’s illustrator, had stated that the story “would not have a bad ending.” Many readers now consider introducing netorare before the conclusion as a spoil to the story.
“I won’t wait for its end if you just succumb to sick people who like NTR. Your work was good, but not anymore.”
“I still don’t understand why the title is ‘Destiny Lovers’ after doing this chapter; it makes no sense. Why build the main plot around a couple for so many years and then decide to abandon everything with an NTR? Was that the ‘Destiny’?”
“You are a shame to a true mangaka if you just say ‘it’s the fault of the editor,’ letting yourself be influenced by others. I expected more from you and your work, but I see you’re just mediocre with a more mediocre ending than many mangas that exist.”
The manga’s illustrator, Tomohiro, didn’t stay silent and began responding to people in English, with some discussions ending quite heatedly.
The illustrator also clarified that in Japan, the Destiny Lovers manga is categorized as “Horror, Mystery, and Suspense.”
Are you intentionally misinterpreting it?
What I said was "I won't make it a bad end," and you understand that it is clearly different from "making it a good end," right?— 智弘カイ@デスティニーラバーズ13巻発売中 (@kai_tomohiro) October 1, 2023
Let’s stay tuned to see how the story unfolds in the upcoming chapters.
