In 2024, a Visual Novel called Otome Sekai no Arukikata was released, developed by Orthros and currently available only for PC and in Japanese. The artwork is stunning, featuring the delicate touch of the artist Mignon. But why are we talking about this game today?
If you pick up Otome Sekai no Arukikata to play without knowing anything about its story, simply because of the beautiful girls and its gorgeous visuals, you’ll likely be surprised by what you’ll read, as the story is completely crazy! Yet, for those who’ve played it, “it’s actually pretty cool.”
The synopsis begins like this:
“Neo Tokyo – a national capital defined as a women-only area by the ‘Gender Separation Law.’ It’s an ideal world for women, dreamed of by feminists, with zones exclusively for women, where only they can live.”
Indeed, when looking at the game’s settings, you’ll notice the city is destroyed, in ruins, despite the presence of cute girls. But let’s dive deeper into the story of Otome Sekai no Arukikata.
The Crazy Story of Otome Sekai no Arukikata
In the future, an AI named “GAIA” rebels against humanity. In a desperate effort, humans create a new AI to counter GAIA. This new AI is called “MOTHER.”
MOTHER takes over humanity’s governance and decides that men and women must live separately. To counter GAIA’s robot forces, MOTHER sends men to the warfront, where they perish fighting, while women are confined to a separate area.
Enter our protagonist, the boy Katagiri Yui… Yes, the short-haired “girl” on the cover is actually our protagonist. Yui was born and raised in a military facility in the men’s district. During a battle against GAIA’s robots, his entire squadron is killed, leaving him as the sole survivor.
On the brink of death, Yui is rescued by a woman who takes him in and raises him as her “daughter.” She even creates an entirely new identity for Yui, making him the “older sister” of her biological daughter.
This woman hides Yui’s true identity because men are forbidden in the women’s district. If it were discovered that Yui is a boy, at best, he would be sent back to the warfront; at worst, he would be executed for desertion.
But how do women in this world view men? Well, decades have passed since MOTHER separated men and women, and women now detest men. Some factions even seek to exterminate all men.
For this reason, Yui must conceal his true identity at all costs. If his secret is revealed, he, his “sister,” and his “mother” would face severe punishment. However, an event changes Yui’s life: he is chosen to attend a military academy composed entirely of women.
The human race has been in decline after years of war, and there is a shortage of people. Yui is forced to train at the military academy alongside other girls, where his secret risks being discovered.
Otome Sekai no Arukikata has a linear story, so you won’t find routes for the game’s heroines as in most Visual Novels. The narrative focuses heavily on the conflict between women’s factions, particularly those aiming to eradicate men.
As of now, no translated version has been announced, so we only have the Japanese version of Otome Sekai no Arukikata. However, since the game is relatively new, it’s possible we’ll see an announcement in the near future.
