Author of Remtheta Braves Online Criticizes Fans Who Don’t Buy Manga While They’re Being Published
In June, mangaka Uenami Kosuke sparked controversy by discussing the potential cancellation of his manga and placing part of the blame on fans who prefer to buy manga only when they are completed. He argues that this practice can hurt sales during publication, increasing the risk of cancellation.
This same criticism was previously raised by the author of No Game No Life, who argued that waiting for a work to be completed before purchasing it is not the right approach, as the series might end up being canceled due to a lack of sales along the way.

Uenami Kosuke, author of “Remtheta Braves Online,” expressed in a message: “‘If it gets canceled midway, I don’t like it, so I’ll buy it when it’s completed’ — works avoided for this reason can’t be completed. Of course, if they don’t sell, they will be canceled. In fact, they end up being finalized at the cancellation point.”
It’s worth noting that Uenami later deleted these messages.
He emphasized that fan support translates into sales, and without those sales during the production process, the continuity of the series is unfeasible. He continued: “If you want to read until the intended end, it’s actually the opposite. Without investment, you can’t get there…!! This doesn’t apply only to books and manga, but to all content.”
Kosuke concluded: “If it’s something done as a hobby or for fun, that’s another story, but commercial content disappears if payments or investments stop. So, if there’s something you want to enjoy, it’s better to bear the cost while it exists in the world so you can enjoy it longer!”
Japanese Reactions to the Author’s Comment:
“Well, I understand the feeling. Having a work interrupted midway is frustrating. But in the end, I buy works that don’t make me feel that way. Like ‘Berserk,’ for example. Is it the readers’ fault for not investing, or is it the fault of the works that don’t evoke that feeling? It’s like Columbus’s egg.”
“The novel I write as a hobby saw an increase in views after it was completed, so I think there are quite a few people who think this way. By the way, I’m proud that I’ve never abandoned a work halfway through until now, lol.”
“I buy series that are published exclusively for commercial purposes, but I don’t buy from authors who started on the web and have a history of abandoning their works. I’m sorry, but that’s based on experience.”
“Someone commented that there might be a crowdfunding element, in a sense. Although there are many flaws, such as unclear fundraising goals or projects failing without refunds…”
“If you want to buy something that’s complete, maybe you should look for classic novels in the used book market. If you don’t mind digital versions, there are countless options nowadays.”
“It’s surprising to know there are people who think ‘I won’t buy because I don’t want it to be interrupted.’ I always thought buying the magazine or volume of the manga you like was just natural.”
