Atelier Hasn’t Given Up on Ecchi with Atelier Yumia

Atelier Hasn't Given Up on Ecchi with Atelier Yumia

A new game in the Atelier series called Atelier Yumia was recently announced and will be released on March 21 for all consoles and PC. Looking at this new game, it’s clear that the rumors about Atelier abandoning ecchi were nothing but false.

Here’s a brief overview of the Atelier series: it’s a JRPG franchise where you control a girl who either already is or becomes an alchemist, and the games are often described as “slice of life”. You talk to people, perform alchemy, and complete quests. Sometimes there’s a storyline with a final boss, but that’s rarely the main focus.

The heroines in earlier games were typically slim and cute, as seen in characters like Totori, Rorona, and Meruru, shown in the images below:

As many already know, Ryza arrived with her thick thighs, which grew larger with each game. Ryza’s games have become the best-selling in the series, even though many Japanese players still prefer Sophie.

Last year, in an interview with IGN Japan, Hosoi, the producer of the Atelier series, stated: “On our part, we don’t want to portray characters in a sexualized way. We’re very careful about that.”

Yet, in September 2024, Atelier Yumia was announced, and what do we notice when we look at the official art of the new protagonist, Yumia?

Now, let’s see how Japanese players are reacting to Yumia:

  • “What was appealing was Ryza’s vibrant and curvy figure.”
  • “This doesn’t look like a young girl.”
  • “Bring back Sophie-chan and Totori-chan.”
  • “I’m so used to Ryza that now I feel like both the hips and thighs are lacking.”
  • “This hip looks small. Ryza’s was bigger, wasn’t it?”
  • “Can she surpass 2B?”
  • “Looks like they really enjoyed the success of Ryza, it’s funny.”
  • “Go back to the roots.”

Personally, I think Atelier will never give up on fanservice.
